For over ten years, Terry Lynch has worked exclusively in the field of mental health. At Athlone Literary Festival this year, he discussed the reality of overcoming mental illness and reaching a mindful state of self.
Terry is a psychotherapist and GP. His first book Beyond Prozac was published in Ireland in 2001, in the UK in 2004, and a second edition was published in Ireland in 2005. Beyond Prozac was short-listed for the UK Mind Book of the Year award in 2002, and reached number 3 in the Irish non-fiction best-sellers list in 2001.
For over ten years, Terry Lynch has worked exclusively in the field of mental health, providing a recovery-oriented service in Limerick. He was appointed by the Irish Department of Health and Children to the Independent Monitoring Group for A Vision for Change (2006-9), and he was re-appointed to the second Independent Monitoring Group for A Vision for Change 2009-12). Terry was also appointed by the CEO of the Health Service Executive to the Health Service Executive’s Expert Advisory Group on Mental Health (2006-8).
Terry is particularly interested in the expansion of our understanding of emotional and mental health, how mental wellness becomes eroded and lost, and how it can be regained and recovered. His second book, SELFHOOD: A Key to the Recovery of Emotional Wellbeing, Mental Wellness and the Prevention of Mental Health Problems is a recovery-focused workbook. This book is designed to help people recover their sense of self which is a key part of the recovery process. Many readers have commented that they found Selfhood to be both insightful and helpful. Terry is currently working on books on depression and bipolar disorder. These books will be published during 2014.
