First Meeting of Donegal Hearing Voices Group

The first meeting of the Donegal Hearing Voices Group took place in Create-A-Link Art Studio, Pearse Road, Letterkenny on Tuesday, 9th June 2009. The meeting lasted for two hours and was well attended by voice-hearers, carers and non-voice-hearers. The importance of this meeting cannot be underestimated as it was the first such meeting for people in Donegal who hear voices.

For the first time, those who hear voices or who have visions are being provided with the opportunity to be able to share with others what their experiences mean for them. The group is open to anyone who feels that a voice-hearing group is relevant to them, and it includes voice-hearers, non-voice-hearers, carers and family members. These groups usually comprise people who share their experiences of hearing voices: they come together to help and learn from one another and to share the same problems and challenges that arise from their own situations.

The purpose of a hearing voices group is to offer a setting where people feel accepted and comfortable. They also offer an opportunity for people to accept and live with their voices in a way that gives them some control and helps them to regain some power over their lives. The group gives whatever support is necessary to voice-hearers in relation to their experiences.

The meeting's of the Hearing Voices Forum take place at the same venue every second Wednesday, between 6 and 8pm. For further information, please contact Bernadette Sheils on 087-2909695 or Bernie O' Neill on 087-6417246.
